Our Journey with the Quran (Part 1)

This course is designed for students who have the desire to develop a deeper connection with Allah through His book and are keen to learn and understand the meanings of the Quran.

This is year 1 of a 3 year course to provide an in-depth and reflective study of the surahs in the 30th Juz of the Quran.

Year 1 ✦ Introduction to the Quran, Surat Al Fatiha and Surat An Naas to Surat Al Feel
Year 2 Surat Al Humaza to Surat Ash Shams
Year 3 Surat Al Balad to Surat An Naba

The course is based on research of traditional tafaseers including Ibn Kathir, Maariful Quran by Mufti Muhammad Shafi, Noble Quran by Mufti Taqi Uthmani, and Tafseer courses delivered by Shaykh Haytham Tamim, Shaykh Akram Nadwi and Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan. Other sources include the Seerah, Hadith and Quran.

Class format Interactive, classwork, group activities, weekly quizzes.

⚠  NO CLASSES during Christmas, Easter and Half-term breaks.

Objectives of this course

1. Introduction to the Quran:

  • Examine the historical and geographical background of Arabia during ancient times. Topics include the definition of a tribe, major tribes in Arabia, lineage of the Prophet (peace be upon him), how history impacted their beliefs and culture, the character of the Arabs, etc.
  • Review the major religions in 6th Century Arabia
  • Review the pagan practises in light of the authentic narrations from hadith and the Seerah.
  • Review the sources of Tafseer and its importance to us today
  • Examine the historical compilation and preservation of the Quran
  • Review the etiquettes of the student of knowledge
  • And more…

2. Study Al Fatiha and the last 10 Surahs:

  • Study the context in which the surah was revealed.
  • Review and understand key concepts such as the Hereafter, the concept of One God, the meaning of Rab etc., in rational and simple terms and how their meanings relate to our world.
  • Study each surah verse by verse.
  • Reflect on lessons and their application in our daily life.
  • Learn the translation of words from Arabic to English and be able to identify them in the mushaf.
  • Learn how to translate verses from Arabic to English.

Course Requirements

  • Punctuality and regular attendance to class are important values of the course.
  • Students are encouraged to read through their notes after class and be ready for pop quizzes.
  • Class discussion and participation is rewarded and highly encouraged.
  • Students are required to purchase the following:
    • A copy of The Majestic Quran (to be used in the second term)
    • A Quranic Arabic textbook to learn and familiarize the Arabic translation (tbd)
